Yuli’s body, as her family and friends called her, was just beginning to develop, her breasts had already grown and her figure was beginning to take on the shape of a woman. But all she could think about was studying, helping her mother and playing with her friends.

“That creep was not satisfied with raping me once, he used me every time he could,” says the young woman, who cried every day not to return to her uncle’s house, but could not tell on him because she was threatened with death.

“The most painful thing is that it has always been thought that these cases are committed by a stranger, but most rapists are their own husbands,” said Yanira Lara, director of the Patronato de Ayuda a Casos de Mujeres Maltratadas (Pacam).

These acts of violence are never casual nor do they come alone. The victims, like Yulissa, denounce that they are assaulted every week and in addition to sexual violence they receive threats, blackmail, insults and verbal and psychological abuse.

But the rape persists internally in her mind, because Yulissa had a child that she does not accept and today she is one more of the many abused women who wander through life with low self-esteem, insecurity, anxiety, depression and little will to live.
